A fashionable version of the 16th and 17th century Ottoman-Turkish prayer rugs was the “double mihrab” rug. The rhomboid medallion that fills the middle of the rug group is created by mirroring the traditional mihrab, the niche in the mosque wall that traditionally had a single apex. These double mihrab Usak rugs were primarily popular in Transylvania. Their symmetric patterns were used as table, bed and catafalque covers this group of rugs became known in specialist literature as “Transylvanian” rugs. Further characteristics of the Transylvanian rugs were the dominating red and blue colours and the line of “Transylvanian medallions” decorating the main band of the border. The pattern of the Transylvanian rugs was simplified from the middle of the 17th century the once complicated arabesque and floral ornaments of the central medallion were replaced by double garlands made of slightly schematic rosettes.
